We are here to help you!

We raise money and accept donations so households in need can access healthy food.
Our team organizes regular food distribution days, with special attention to Elders and families with young children.
Volunteers help with everything from sorting and packing to welcoming people and sharing supplies.

Our thrift shop opened in 2017 to give the community low cost options for clothing, toys, and household items.
You will find items for men, women, and children at prices that fit tight budgets, and the income from sales supports the food bank.
The shop runs with the help of volunteers who sort donations, look after the space, and serve customers.
Abluqta means “Let us step forward” in Inuktitut. That spirit guides everything we do.
We provide essential services in Baker Lake, Nunavut. Our work also creates opportunities and work experience for Inuit who face barriers and disabilities in the community.
Abluqta is led by a small board of directors and operates a combined Thrift Shop and Food Bank social enterprise. Since 2017, we have been serving the people of Baker Lake with affordable goods and food support.
We are different from a traditional charity. Our Thrift Shop helps generate income, and we rely on local volunteers to keep the doors open. Without our volunteers and community support, Abluqta would not exist.
Agnico Eagle Mines supports us as a funding sponsor. This partnership helps cover part of our overhead and food bank supplies. Costs in Nunavut are high, especially for food, so we plan carefully and stretch every dollar. Support from sponsors and fundraising allows us to pay for rent, wages, taxes and workers compensation, business licenses, training, telephone, internet, and other operating costs.
We run regular food bank distributions and keep emergency supplies for people in urgent need between food bank days. We choose food that is cost effective and meets the needs of our clients. Every purchase is made with care, so families in Baker Lake receive as much value as possible.

We wanted a logo that reflected who we are and what we do, so we invited the community to take part in a logo contest.
The final image brings together both sides of our social enterprise. A clothes hanger symbolizes the Thrift Shop. An ulu symbolizes the Food Bank. An ulu is a traditional woman’s knife with a curved blade, used to cut fresh or frozen meat.
The winning concept was created by Candis Sateana from Rankin Inlet. She received a laptop as a prize for her design.
Graphic designer Shane Smith from Ottawa then developed Candis’ concept into the logo we use today.
